This book is full of short stories which run, with a few exceptions, no more than ten pages in length. It was first published in 1903. The kindle edition is a facsimile reproduction of a 1906 edition of the book. There are some noticeable errors in spelling towards the end and the layout isn’t great but these don’t distract from the enjoyment of the book.The characters in the stories are all residents of Chicago. They range from lower class individuals to those of more genteel station. Many of the stories consist mostly of dialogue. The author particularly focuses on portraying the dialect of lower class persons and it is fair to say he does so realistically, minus of course, any profane language.
Some highlights of the stories. One is about a misanthropic man who spitefully sends family members Christmas gifts which he is sure they will have no use for. Another is of a man who runs into a police officer in the middle of the night and tells the cop his story of how his wife kicked him out of their residence a year or two earlier and that he now desires to return to her. Two stories deal with salesmen trying to sell their wares. Another features a man telling a story of how he ended up in jail while a hobo. Yet another tells the story of a young man who is tormented with guilt after a young thug whom he hangs out with engages in harassment of his sister. A story that particularly interested me features a Civil War veteran complaining to his wife in a thick rural (or redneck) dialect about veterans of the Spanish American War.
The story I found most humorous was “Dudley, 89,” which is about a man who prepares a sentimental speech full of clichés to deliver at his college reunion.
Some of these stories aren’t very deep but they feature diverting character sketches and relatively plausible situations.
